...plummet...even further...

i'm from the old skool TO scene that roared & raged in the mid90s--syrous, pleasure force, industry, funkist, house of trance, knowledge, subb, transcendance, dose, liquid adrenaline...to name but a few. thankfully i left my city b/4 the scene's pedigree was thoroughly soiled by these twits & the rest of the mangled, crystal-pumped, GHB & dirty Es massive. & how embarrassing to showcase this rubbish for both the T-dot & the once legendary Essential Mix.

totus tuus

Muck

Don't waist your time absolute muck.

Music with an edge

I think these guys have a pretty unique sound. Loved the crazy riff behind Justice's D.A.N.C.E. Undoubtedly there is some dodgy mixing or cut and pasting but the tracklisting is mint. Great to watch live which their bad ass masks…

not the worst

considering the comments, how come this mix has received an average score of '7' then....
Having read the comments i was expecting a shocker, but it wasn't as bad as made out. There were good bits. It's just a messy mix of styles that appears not to have been thought out beforehand. This appears to be sound this year. Eletro house is out, and it seems no-one can think of a viable new sound so they've just chucked every sound 'and the kitchen sink' into a mix and hope some of it hits home. It's not particularly creative or ground breaking, but it's not the end of dance music (hopefully not)....

Have to agree with this.:

''When will we ever hear masters of music creation like: Danny Tenaglia, B.T., Sasha, Digweed, Yousef, Jonathan Lilse, Nick Warren, James Zabielia, James Lavalle, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold...''

'Times they are a changin' buddy, i'm afraid that (golden) time has come and gone....

WHAT THE @#$% IS WRONG WITH THE BBC? THIS IS MSTRKRAP

What ever happened to skilled DJ's who had a knowledge of music that could be remixed or mixed for that matter with something other than FUCKING NOISE. My 6 year old niece could have replicated this crap on her 20 Key Casio Midi Keyboard. Where are the innovative mix artists and producers that made millions of anxious electronica fans tune in week after week to the Essential Mix from every corner of the globe where a computer with internet service was plugged in and turned on. When will we ever hear masters of music creation like: Danny Tenaglia, B.T., Sasha, Digweed, Yousef, Jonathan Lilse, Nick Warren, James Zabielia, James Lavalle, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Sandra Collins, etc,, etc..., I can name 200 hundred quality DJ's. The last 6 months I can speak of 2 maybe 3 EM's that were noteworthy collective collaberations that used skill and style as an artist selected to perform for a world wide audience should have in their arsenal. The destruction of the BBC Radio 1 EM programming choices is a sad, painfull experience I am sorry to hear and see others so affected by too! Wake up BBC Executives, Pete Tong and Companies who advertise on Radio 1, listen to the masses of outraged Radio 1 faithful listeners (Actually We Are Your Customers). We ask for quality over quantity and a job well done just like we seek in most every other product we buy or use. Free is only a good deal when its value out weighs its required effort to experience!

The BBc is not a commerical

The BBc is not a commerical station, it is a publicly funded body...it gets it;s money from the British tax payers=millions in license fees...that doesn;t make them any less accountable for wats going on.
i urge you to Email them>> essentialmix@bbc.co.uk
We have to be aware the the EM has been degraded to such an extent, it;s just not the premier show anymore, it doesn't have the same impact it did years ago, when this was pretty much the only place to hear & promote underground club music....with the internet etc...DJ's don;t have to get on the EM to get their music out.
and really do DJ's like carl craig , lauren garnier...jeff mills need to?....does taking the time to put together a 2hr earn them any cash??...no, they'd rather put out some mix CD...or watever...

I have to admit...

the whole thing's trashy and rough, but id rather be shocked than bored and id take this over ANY minimal, because unlike minimal, at least SOMETHING is happening here...

Don't be too harsh.

If it's not your tea, don't drink it.

I didn't particularly fall in love with the mix either but I won't slag it entirely. I am getting frustrated with that particular scene in that they're sowing the seeds of their own demise by becoming ad hoc mash-up artists, getting loaded at each others gigs and patting themselves on the back for every clever thought they can put together. It is the sound of today's youth though, staggering along with little original content to roll around the neurons, getting pissed up five nights a week and wondering where they are when they sober up 6 years later. Overstimulated and undernourished, all I hear is a lack of respect for proper music put together by musicians not your laptop.

I am from Canada so I'll give them the hometown discount, 5/10 middling and not terribly original. They don't quite make the cut.

Kids are stupid..

i just cannot find any redeeming qualities in this style of 'music'(i use the term loosely)....it's pure trash, lacking in melodies, harmonies...any sort of depth or longevity...
My main problem is that this genre seems to be on the EM every other week....im running out of expletive's to curse these boring, play the same shit DJ's....and the clown's at the BBC who week on week tramp out the same shit to the kids..
i long for the days of Dj's who use a deep knowledge of music to subtly build a set and suck you into an alternate reality...not this wham, bam , thank you mam' cheap trash.

those Dj's are out there, they're just not on the EM.

nearly 6month into the year...i don;t rate 1 single EM, and i can see the whole year passing without a single EM of any quality surfacing..
perhaps im just a grump old cunt...and should go listen to radio2.

It's not all garbage

I wouldn't unilaterally condemn the whole genre...the Streetlife DJs EM from 2007 is IMHO a pretty good mix. But then you can tell they put a lot of effort into that one rather than just throwing down the same set they've been playing on tour for the past year.

I'm just ragging on MSTRKRFT because they're hometown and so I hold them to a higher standard...or maybe, as an hobbyist music producer, I'm just envious of their success.

I'm so sorry

Toronto used to be a great place for all genres of electronic music, then things died pretty much and the scene became really stale. Talent has to be brought in. This mix is a result of this. I'm so so so so sorry for living in the same city as these guys, and thinking that in some way i may have contributed to their existence (butterfly effect). On the flip side how on earth did they get selected for the essential mix?

Also from TO

These guys epitomize everything that's wrong about the Toronto electronic scene (and conceivably the electronic scene in general). Their album is bland and derivative, their remixes mediocre and their DJ sets are pretty much paint-by-numbers electrotrash. Yet here they are on the Essential Mix.

Their fame, at least as far as I can tell, seems to be almost entirely based off their earlier work as part of the much beloved DFA 1979 (RIP).

die, die, die

kill it with fire, rocks, machine guns...ANYTHING, just make it stop..

yet MORE noisy Nu-rave/jump-up/fidget electro house cunting bollox...this does not sound different, it is more of the same from the 'BBC Introducing tour'..this is exactly the same shit all those Dj played and here we have MORE..i can
n;t take it...

music for stupid cunts...with stupid hoxton mullets..total and utter shite of the highest order...make it go away

-1,000,000/10

I liked it...

Given the intro at the bginning, I kept imagining 2 drunk guys spinning late at night at some random downtown club. It's not your typical club music, though. Sure there's old top-40 stuff in there, but the sound is still quite diffent, and I like it. Lots of energy. Not the kind of mix you keep on hand for years to come, granted, but I thought it was refreshing and upbeat. It will stay on the MP3 player for at least a few workouts to come... 7/10.

This sound needs to die.

Kill it with fire.
